Economic Buzz: UK Enters Technical Recession as Economy Contracts by 0.3% in Q4 2023

The UK's economy shrank by 0.3% in the final quarter of 2023, entering a technical recession for the first time since the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. High inflation, record borrowing costs, and weak external demand weighed on demand and activity. Household consumption declined, while net trade contributed negatively to GDP. Fixed investment rose, and government consumption edged up. On a yearly basis, the UK economy contracted by 0.2% in Q4.
